Benefits of frankincense include:

May reduce arthritis

Frankincense has anti-inflammatory effects that may help reduce joint inflammation caused by arthritis and has also been observed by researchers as inhibiting leukocyte elastase (leukotrienes – compounds that can cause inflammation) that can cause the symptoms of arthritis. A study conducted by Badria in 2004 also showed that after one month of treatment with frankincense oil there was a significant reduction of pain on the muscle and joint active movement, passive movement, tenderness, nocturnal pain and a significant improvement of pain free walking time in arthritis patient.

Terpenes, including boswellic acid, appear to be the strongest anti-inflammatory compounds in frankincense.

May improve gut function and inflammatory bowel disease

Frankincense’s anti-inflammatory properties may also help your gut function properly.

The gum resin extract from Boswellia of frankincense has been reported to have positive therapeutic effects in inflammatory bowel disease via research by Krielgstein 2001. A clinical study by Gehardt 2001 reported that frankincense can treat inflammation that occurs in the digestive tract.

Another 2017 study found that frankincense, in combination with other herbal medicines, reduced abdominal pain, bloating, and even associated depression and anxiety in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Improves Asthma

Traditional medicine has used frankincense to treat bronchitis and asthma for centuries.

Badria 2002 and Gupta 1998 reported that frankincense can be used to treat bronchial asthma in some people. According to the study, during 6 weeks of treatment, subjects took frankincense regularly and after 6 months it showed significant effect.

Research suggests that it’s compounds may prevent the production of leukotrienes, which cause the bronchial muscles to constrict in asthma and may also affect Th2 cytokines, which can cause inflammation and mucus overproduction in people with asthma.

Improves immune function

A study by Sharma and Singh in 1989 showed that the ingestion of an extract of boswellia/frankincense can improve immunity and increase the leukocyte level and also antibody production which improve immune modulator response.

May help to lower blood pressure

Frankincense has a reliever and sedative function and in high doses can lower the blood pressure especially in treatment of a hypertension patient. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart disease that known as number one killer in the world.

Can help to prevent cardiovascular disease

By lowering blood pressure and maintaining healthy blood vessels, frankincense has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease by almost 20%.

Maintains oral health

Frankincense may help improve oral hygiene and prevent gum disease.

The boswellic acids it provides appear to have strong antibacterial properties, which may help prevent and treat oral infections.

In one test-tube study, frankincense extract was effective against aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, a bacterium that causes aggressive gum disease.

In another small study, participants chewed gum containing frankincense for 5 hours, with saliva samples indicating reduced numbers of microbes each hour. The authors suggested that frankincense may decrease sources of infection in the mouth.

May have anticancer properties

Studies show that frankincense may have anticancer effects.

Test-tube studies suggest that the boswellic acids it contains may prevent cancer cells from spreading.

A research review notes that boswellic acids may also prevent the formation of DNA in cancerous cells, which could help limit cancer growth.

So far, test-tube studies suggest that frankincense may fight breast, prostate, pancreatic, skin, and colon cancer cells.

It may also help reduce side effects of cancer treatment.

May help to treat herpes

An active component called triterpenoids in frankincense showed anti-herpes activity and immunomodulatory effects according to study by Badria and Botros in 2003. This study proved that frankincense is effective in treating herpes and preventing the herpes virus that can affect the skin and genital organs.

May help to delay aging of skin and help skin conditions

Some anti-aging products include frankincense in their ingredients since it has been proven it can promote collagen production and rejuvenating new skin cells that may aid in young and firm skin. During research in 1998, it was noted that frankincense active components (triterpenoids) can help to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and fungal infections.

May help with the maintenance of diabetes

Boswellia gum or frankincense has been used for the treatment of diabetes since it has an anti-hyperglycaemic effect that can maintain normal blood sugar level within the blood.

Frankincense has also been linked to being effective in protecting the liver from free radical damage.

A patient with Hepatitis C who took frankincense daily as a supplement treatment for 18 months had significant improvement in symptoms.
